Diablo 4: Season 4 – Necromancer Leveling Builds

Necromancers retain their identity as summoners and grim magic casters, wielding blood, blight, and bone as one of the five playable classes in the launch of Diablo 4. They haven’t changed too drastically from their iterations, but even veteran fans of the franchise might have trouble getting a good build going.

Diablo 4’s Gauntlet Mode Explained

Diablo’s newest Gauntlet mode puts players in weekly challenges, and this is everything curious fans should know before getting started.

The early portions of Diablo 4 are fairly tame as far as difficulty is concerned. Many players can breeze through the campaign using whatever they feel like using. However, things do start to slow down at around the Level 35 mark, and Necromancers might start running into issues when it comes to surviving and dealing damage. Here are three builds designed for pre-Level 50 Necromancers with limited resources.

Updated May 16, 2024 by Marc Santos: Necromancers have received major buffs to their minion builds throughout the course of its first few seasons. Season 3 in particular saw siginificant increases to the damage dealt by all minions, and a number of skills like Decompose and Bone Prison received reworks that make them more beneficial to summoner setups. The Loot Reborn update also saw a major rework to equipment stats and a few key Necromancer minion build aspects. This guide has been updated to properly reflect all these changes.

The following guide displays only the most important skills and passives needed for the respective builds to work. All leftover skill points can be safely spent on whatever players prefer.

Necromancer Minion Build

Minions have been on the butt-end of several nerfs and buffs over Diablo 4’s development. Luckily, Skeletons have landed on a fairly decent spot after the launch build of the game, and even more so in Season of Loot Reborn. Players can safely build down this path in the early game for some startling success.

Decompose and Skeletal Mages are your main sources of damage with this build. The former deals decent damage for a Basic Skill, but it’s mainly here to create Corpses and apply Vulnerable. The DPS of Shadow Mages early in the game is extremely high, so much so that they can easily carry players to Diablo 4’s third World Tier even when severely underleveled. Cast Iron Maiden, Corpse Explosion, and Blight for extra damage-over-time and damage buffs, then continuously cast Decompose at a target while your mages blast them with Shadow magic. Skeletal Defenders and Iron Golem can keep the pressure off you and your mages. If you’re having trouble managing aggro, use Bone Golem instead for the taunt.

Main Aspects

  • Frenzied Dead: Minions gain attack speed every time they attack an enemy. Stacks up to three times.
  • Reanimation: Minions deal more damage the longer they’ve stayed alive. Caps at 10 seconds.
  • Occult Domination: Summon more Skeletal Warriors and Mages
  • Damned: Deal increased Shadow Damage to enemies afflicted by any Curse.

Out of all the Aspects, you should always have these three equipped. Again, these are here to further improve the DPS of Shadow Mages. Use whatever else you have for the rest of your gear slots. To get the most out of this build, Temper your equipment to have bonus Skeletal Mage damage.

Overpowering Blood Surge Build

This build uses the many built-in Overpower passives in the Necromancer’s Blood skills to disintegrate entire rooms full of monsters in a few Skill casts. Blood Surge is the star of this show, and every ounce of the following setups is designed to make it reliable in almost every situation.

Paranormal Blood Surge greatly increases the consistency of Overpower procs, and even more so with the Rathma’s Vigor Key Passive. We take Acolyte’s Hemorrhage for the increased attack speed and chance to form Blood Orbs, which will fuel Blood Surge and the Rathma’s Vigor.

Use Corpse Explosion with Grim Harvest to generate more Essence, and cast Corpse Tendrils when you can to group enemies up and make them Vulnerable. When fighting a boss or elite pack, use Bone Storm for more DPS. Don’t forget to frequently cast your Blood Golem’s active skill for even more AOE damage.

Diablo 4: How to Get Proofs of Might

Proofs of Might are an exclusive pick-up for the Gauntlet dungeon in Diablo 4. Here’s what players must do to get them.

Main Aspects

The following are the primary Aspects you should be using for this build. Use whatever else you have for your other equipment slots:

  • Rathma’s Chosen: When your Blood Skills Overpower, gain increased attack speed.
  • Blood-bathed Aspect: Blood Surge’s nova echoes again after a short delay, dealing reduced damage.
  • Blood-boiling Aspect: When your Core Skills Overpower, spawn Volatile Blood Drops that explode when picked up. Every 20 seconds, your next Core Skill Overpowers.
  • Aspect of the Expectant: After attacking with your Basic Skill, your next Core Skill deals up to 30% more damage.

Expectant is a staple Diablo 4 Offensive Aspect that’s great for many builds. Since you’ll be using Hemorrhage a lot with this setup, there’s no reason not to take Expectant as part of your loadout. Temper your gear to have bonus Blood Overpower damage.

Blood Lance Hybrid Summoner Build

Diablo 4 Supernatural Blood Lance Skill Description

This is a combination of both builds shown above, and it is essentially a more aggressive version of the Minion Master setup with very high burst damage potential. It uses Overpower bonuses to supercharge Blood Lance, making it capable of one-shotting Level 30+ elites on World Tier 1.

The same playstyle from the Blood Surge build applies here. Players should focus on repeatedly casting Blood Lance until it gets a guaranteed Overpower proc on the next hit. To do this, a ton of Essence is required, which is why the build uses Bone Prison and Corpse Explosion with the Grim Harvest passive.

Transfusion will help keep Minions alive since players won’t be taking their associated mastery nodes for this build. This further emphasizes the importance of Blood Orbs for staying alive and increasing damage by keeping the Necromancer Fortified.

Main Aspects

  • Aspect of Inner Calm – Deal increased damage, which increases the longer you stand still.
  • Blood Seeker’s Aspect – Blood Lance deals 15-25% increased damage to its primary target per Lanced enemy.
  • Hungry Blood: Each cast of Blood Lance will fire an additional Blood Lance at a nearby enemy when it hits a target that’s already lanced.

These Aspects will increase your damage while improving Blood Lance’s power against groups. You’re free to use whichever Aspects you have for your other slots, but we highly recommend ones that restore Essence, like Adaptibility, Umbral, and Starlight Aspects. To maximize DPS, Temper your equipment to deal extra Blood Damage.
