Akel’s general secretary Stefanos Stefanou met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis in Athens on Monday, with the Cyprus problem being top of the agenda.
“We had a very interesting discussion during an important period where Greco-Turkish relations are moving forward, there is dialogue between Greece and Turkey, and this helps the climate surrounding the Cyprus problem,” Stefanou said after the meeting.
He added this was the best time to hold the meeting, as there is some activity surrounding the Cyprus problem, after President Nikos Christodoulides met with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in New York.
The general secretary stressed it was high time to break the deadlock and resume negotiations to solve the problem.
“I believe e owe this to the Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and this is why we will keep trying.”
Mitsotakis heralded the meeting in New York as a “positive first step”, reiterating that Greece’s position is that a solution is found on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
