Registration for the 2024-2025 European Statistics Competition will take place from October 21 to November 19, according to an announcement from the Press and Information Office (PIO).
The office explained that the competition aims to promote statistics and encourage teamwork among students.
The competition, organised by the European Statistical System (ESS), returns for its eighth consecutive year following record participation last year, with over 22,000 entries.
The ESS includes the national statistical offices of EU member states and Eurostat.
In Cyprus, the competition is organised by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), the Ministry of Education, the University of Cyprus, and the Cyprus Statistical Society.
It focuses on the field of statistics and official data, encouraging students’ curiosity and interest in these areas.
The competition consists of two parts. These include a national contest, run by national statistical authorities, and a European final, organised by Eurostat.
The top two teams from each category in the national phase will move on to the European final, held in English.
The national phase in Cyprus runs from October 2024 to March 2025.
It involves two assignments. The first is an online quiz with closed-ended questions, while the second requires teams to prepare a statistical analysis based on provided data.
The European final will be held between April and May 2025, where teams will create a video presenting official statistics to support a chosen message on a given topic.
