Customs dept seizes bulgur, rice and potatoes from Turkey at crossing point

The customs department on Friday announced that large quantities of food which had been produced in Turkey had been seized at the Ayios Dhometios crossing point from cars driving from the north into the Republic.

In total, 144kg of bulgur and 48kg of rice were found in one car, while 30kg of pre-fried potatoes were found in a second car.

The drivers of both cars were issued fines and the food was all confiscated.

The Green Line regulation allows for small amounts of some products to be crossed from between Cyprus’ two sides under some specific circumstances, though these had been greatly exceeded by both vehicles.

The maximum value of purchases which one can take across the Green Line is €260, while food items are allowed to cross the Green Line in “small quantities” provided that they are not on the banned list.
