Costumed walkers, floats bring Halloween spirit to Birdsboro

A crowd lined the streets of Birdsboro to see costumed walkers and floats in the Rotary Club’s annual Halloween parade on Oct. 17.

This year’s parade was one of the club’s largest both in terms of participants and spectators.

“For over 45 years the Birdsboro Rotary Club has hosted this fun event, lighting up the evening with floats, costumes and good cheer,” Nancy Kauffman, president of the Birdsboro Rotary Club, said in a statement. “This event draws hundreds from the area and is a chance to bring the community together, young and old to have fun and enjoy the Halloween spirit.”

Kauffman, a longtime resident of Birdsboro, said this is a great event where everyone can come together and enjoy a night out in support of the community.

“I love the fact that this tradition lives on,” she said. “My own children loved this parade and now my grandchildren can!”

Birdsboro Mayor Anthony Scioli thanked the Rotary Club for sponsoring the event.

“It was a beautiful autumn night in Birdsboro for our annual Halloween parade,” Scioli said in a statement.

He also thanked the Birdsboro Police, Fire, Public Works, Daniel Boone School District, Scouts, churches and other community organizations.

“This year we saw an increase in floats and walkers who participated in our event.  The streets were lined with hundreds of kids in costumes and families cheering our parade.  A really fun night for all,” said Mayor Scioli.

The parade featured Pirates in Pajamas, a school bus converted into a correctional facility and dancing aliens and astronauts.

The Next Step Dance Studio won Best Business Walkers for their outer space theme.

“We had many awesome aliens and astronauts! The kids performed a hip hop routine for the judges and we will perform it again for the Reading Royals home opener,” Melissa Shutt, owner and director of The Next Step Dance Studio, said in a statement.

The Birdsboro Halloween Parade is always the studio’s first event to kick off their dance season and one of the most fun, Shutt said.

“We are excited to be celebrating 20 years of business this year!”

Awards were given out before the parade began.
