Christodoulides meets Armenian PM Pashinyan and others in New York

President Nikos Christodoulides met Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and other heads of government from across the globe on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

The meeting between Christodoulides and Pashinyan focused on issues concerning bilateral relations, developments regarding the Cyprus problem, relations between Armenia and the European Union, and cooperation between the two countries in various international forums.

Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said after the meeting that “the longstanding close ties between Cyprus and Armenia were reaffirmed”, while both sides expressed “strong support” for one another.

He added that Christodoulides had “reiterated the Republic of Cyprus’ support for Armenia’s territorial integrity and independence, as well as for the strengthening of relations between the EU and Armenia.”

Pashinyan, according to the Cyprus News Agency, reaffirmed his support for a solution to the Cyprus problem and informed Christodoulides about ongoing negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan following the latter’s recapture of the Karabakh region.

After his meeting with Pashinyan, Christodoulides met the Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, with the pair discussing the ongoing situations in the Middle East and in the Red Sea, bilateral relations between the two countries, and developments regarding the Cyprus problem.

Letymbiotis said Christodoulides had “also made reference to the Republic of Cyprus’ ‘Amalthea’ initiative, which is in force to provide humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza.”

“Will was expressed on both sides to further strengthen bilateral relations in areas such as investment, trade, transport through direct flights, as well as strengthening the bilateral political dialogue” between the two countries, Letymbiotis said.

He added that Christodoulides had “also underlined the Republic of Cyprus’ desire to strengthen the EU’s relations with the region’s countries”.

Following this meeting, Christodoulides met Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, with the pair discussing bilateral relations between the two countries and developments regarding the Cyprus problem.

Letymbiotis said Christodoulides had thanked Al-Saud for Saudi Arabia’s position on the Cyprus problem.

He added that the pair had made a “joint commitment” to further deepen relations between the two countries at a strategic level, and said there are “great prospects” for mutually beneficial political and economic cooperation.

Christodoulides is due to make his speech to at the general assembly on Wednesday.
