China has decided to abolish visa requirements for Cypriot nationals, it was reported on Friday.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced the move to President Nikos Christodoulides during a meeting in New York on Thursday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
According to government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the President in a meeting with the Chinese minister had discussed the excellent bilateral relations of the Republic with the People’s Republic of China, which are being strengthened.
“Within this context the Chinese foreign minister announced that China is abolishing visa requirements for Cypriot nationals traveling to that country, a tangible testament to enhanced relations,” Letymbiotis said.
Additionally, Christodoulides and Yi discussed a bilateral air transport agreement which has been signed and is expected to significantly improve connectivity between the two countries.
The Cyprus problem was also discussed during the meeting, the spokesman said, adding that as one of the five permanent members of the security council, China has historically supported Cyprus and “backs our national cause on the basis of principles and values”.
Christodoulides, moreover, briefed the Chinese foreign minister on the latest developments and on efforts made by the Greek Cypriot side to restart negotiations, as well as on his recent meeting with the UN secretary general.
