Cabinet approves student benefits for those returning to north

Children of Greek Cypriot parents resettling in the north will now receive the same monthly allowance as students from enclaved families, following a new cabinet decision aimed at supporting families living in the occupied areas.

The measure, proposed by Deputy Welfare Minister Marilena Evangelou, provides allowances for students attending Cypriot universities (€371 per month) and for those studying abroad (€427 per month if no tuition fees are paid, or €644 per month if fees are required).

Evangelou noted that there are currently 360 resettled individuals and 331 enclaved individuals, adding that only a few dozen students would benefit from the allowance.

The deputy minister said this was “yet another step aiming at continuing resettlement, in the framework of the government’s broader efforts to keep the occupied villages alive in the tough conditions of [Turkish] occupation.”

The decision builds on an earlier cabinet proposal approved on April 30, which revised the resettlement plan to include additional incentives and support for families relocating to the north.
