Bulgaria investigates company’s links to Lebanon radios that exploded

Bulgaria’s security service said on Thursday it would investigate a company linked to the sale of pagers to the Lebanese Hezbollah group that exploded this week in a coordinated attack.

The Bulgarian State Security Agency said in a statement that it was working with the Interior Ministry to investigate the role of a state-registered company, without naming it.

Bulgarian media reports say Sofia-based Norta Global Ltd facilitated the sale of pagers that exploded across Lebanon on Tuesday, killing 11 people and injuring 4,000 others.

Reuters could not immediately verify Norta’s connection to the matter. Company officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A lawyer who registered the company in an apartment building in Sofia did not respond to Reuters’ questions.

A Reuters analysis of images of destroyed pagers showed their design was consistent with walkie-talkies made by Taiwanese company Gold Apollo. Gold Apollo said on Wednesday the pagers were made by Budapest-based consultancy BAC.

But Hungarian news site Telex said Norta had already facilitated the sale, citing sources.

The State Security Agency said it had not detected any shipments of the suspicious pagers on Bulgarian territory.
