Bulgaria denies involvement in manufacturing pagers used in Lebanon attack

The Bulgarian Security Service confirmed today that no pagers used in the Lebanon attack were imported, exported or manufactured in Bulgaria.

Bulgarian authorities said yesterday that the Interior Ministry and security services had opened an investigation into the possible connection of a company to the sale of pagers to the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which exploded this week in a simultaneous attack.

Bulgaria’s security service said yesterday it would investigate a company linked to the sale of pagers to the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which exploded this week in a coordinated attack.

The Bulgarian State Security Agency said in a statement that it was working with the Interior Ministry to investigate the role of a state-registered company, without naming it.

Bulgarian media reports said Sofia-based Norta Global Ltd facilitated the sale of pagers that exploded across Lebanon on Tuesday, killing 11 people and injuring 4,000 others.

A Reuters analysis of images of destroyed pagers showed their design was consistent with walkie-talkies made by Taiwanese company Gold Apollo.

The pagers were made by Budapest-based BAC Consulting, Gold Abuelo said on Monday.

But the Hungarian news site Telex said Norta had already facilitated the sale, citing sources.

The State Security Agency said it had not detected any shipments of the suspicious pagers on Bulgarian territory.
