Boehly’s new plan after Freund rejection at Stamford Bridge – GiveMeSport

Chelsea have set their sights on making up to four behind the scenes appointments after missing out on unveiling Christoph Freund as the new sporting director at Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

A Todd Boehly-led consortium completed a £4.25billion takeover of the Blues in May and the American is looking to make alterations at boardroom level after splashing out more than £250million during the summer transfer window.

GiveMeSport The Verdict

What’s the latest news involving Freund?

Freund refused to rule out the prospect of becoming Chelsea’s sporting director when asked about links to the job after current employers Red Bull Salzburg drew with the Blues in a Champions League group stage clash last week.

It appeared a move to Stamford Bridge was on the cards when respected Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed Chelsea were on the verge of reaching an agreement over personal terms with the 45-year-old.

However, the Blues’ hierarchy were forced to head back to the drawing board when Freund confirmed he would be staying with Austrian Bundesliga outfit Salzburg instead of moving to the Premier League.

Boehly is looking to fill the sporting director vacancy ahead of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar and new head coach Graham Potter, who was appointed earlier this month, has also been involved in the process of finding the right candidate.

It has emerged that Boehly has intentions to develop a multi-club model, similar to Red Bull, meaning Freund would have been an ideal candidate as he has already been involved in that system while with Salzburg.

What has Simon Phillips said about the situation?

Phillips understands that Chelsea were keen to hire Freund and that he would not have been the only fresh face behind the scenes.

The journalist is aware that the west Londoners intend to make up to three more appointments after filling the sporting director vacancy, with Paul Mitchell and Luis Campos being contenders.

Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: “This is where the uncertainty comes in – Chelsea are not just looking for one new guy for the recruitment team. They want two or three others as well.

“They were looking at Freund for the sporting director job, but there are other roles available that could come up.

“I think that’s why you’re still seeing the links with Paul Mitchell and Luis Campos as well.”

Would Mitchell and Campos be interested in heading to Chelsea?

CBS reporter Ben Jacobs has claimed that Mitchell is keen on securing a behind the scenes role at Chelsea.

The 41-year-old is currently at Monaco but admitted he would be interested in a return to the Premier League during the summer.

Meanwhile, Campos has reportedly already been offered a Chelsea contract worth £7million-per-year and that salary could turn his head.

The 58-year-old joined reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain as an advisor in July, but he is a man in demand.

That is because he has also been linked with Manchester United as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to complete a takeover at Old Trafford.
