“It sounds counterintuitive, but small, low-intensity surface fires, the fires that burn on the forest floor instead of being in the canopy, can be beneficial in certain ecosystems,” said Regan Moll-Dohm, communications director for Berks Nature, which manages the 900-acre Neversink Mountain preserve.
