Assassination Attempts: Different Effects on US Elections Throughout History

T + T – Normal size

In the midst of his election campaign, Republican candidate Donald Trump was subjected to a second assassination attempt, after the previous assassination attempt last July, which sparked mixed reactions and reopened the debate about the impact of assassination attempts on election campaigns.

While the investigation into the second attack on Trump continues, it remains difficult to determine the ultimate impact of this incident on the election outcome. Although assassination attempts can sometimes lead to increased support for candidates, the long-term impact can be uncertain. Given the current political tensions, monitoring the impact of these incidents on Trump’s campaign will remain an important topic in the coming weeks.

Second attack

While the spotlight was on Trump over the first assassination attempt, a second attack on him occurred at his Florida headquarters. According to initial reports, Trump was on his way to campaign headquarters after a rally when he was shot at close range. Fortunately, Trump escaped the attack without injury, but the incident raised widespread concerns about security and safety on campaign trails.

History and influence

Assassination attempts have always been a part of American political history, and they have had different effects on candidates and their campaigns. In each case, candidates and voters interacted in different ways that affected the outcome of the election. Not every time, they led to electoral support for the politician who was the target of the assassination attempt. In some cases, the effect was the opposite, which may have been reflected on Trump as well, unlike the first assassination attempt, which earned him points and sympathy.

Theodore Roosevelt

Former President Theodore Roosevelt was a prime example of how assassination attempts affected election campaigns. In 1912, during his third presidential campaign under the banner of the Progressive Party, Roosevelt was shot by a mentally disturbed assailant. After being wounded, Roosevelt continued his speech, which increased his popularity. However, this was not enough to win the election, as he lost to Woodrow Wilson.

George Wallace

George Wallace, former governor of Alabama, was the victim of an assassination attempt in 1972 while seeking the Democratic nomination. The bullets hit him deeply and severely affected his ability to continue his campaign. Despite the sympathy he received from many, his injuries led to a deterioration in his health and negatively affected his chances for election.

Ronald Reagan

Despite the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan in March 1981, which came shortly after he took office, the incident had a complex effect. Initially, it boosted Reagan’s popularity, with his approval rating rising to 68%, but over time it declined, before improving again before the 1984 election.

Speculations

The second attack on Trump comes at a critical time, with speculation mounting about its impact on his electoral prospects. History shows that reactions to assassination attempts can be mixed. In some cases, such as Reagan’s, they can lead to a temporary boost in public support. In others, such as Wallace’s, they can lead to a marked decline in a campaign’s effectiveness.

Support for political violence has risen in recent years, with more than 20% of Americans saying it may be justified in some cases, but the current attempts against Trump may bolster his support among his diehard supporters, while increasing the anxiety of moderate voters.
