Apple Barn in Snakesbury Cottage in Iwade Road, Newington to become holiday let

A redundant barn is set to be transformed into a holiday let despite council opposition.

The Apple Barn in Snakesbury Cottage in Iwade Road, Newington, which dates back to the early 1800s will be refurbished.

Applicant Mr and Mrs Finlon have now gained permission to convert the barn after Swale council gave the plans the nod on Wednesday, September 18.

But Newington Parish Council had originally opposed the plans.

It said: “There is no evidence for the need for a holiday let as Newington is not a holiday destination.”

However, the applicants said that the development would “create jobs and investment” and would improve the state of the building.

They added: “Holiday lets such as this bolster the local economy through the willingness of visitors to use the restaurants, pubs, shops and tourist attractions in the Newington and Swale area.

“The proposed improvements would enhance the setting and aesthetic contribution to the locality.”

This was after the 690 square metre site, which also includes a cottage building, was sold for £340,000 in July last year during a Clive Emson auction.

The proposals, which were submitted in February, include an open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area with a bathroom and an owner’s store on the ground floor.

Meanwhile, upstairs there will be a mezzanine bedroom with ensuite facilities all accessed by a circular stair.

Two new car parking spaces will also be added to the premises.

Mr and Mrs Finlon have been approached for further information via their agent Woodstock Associates.
