RODANTHE, N.C. (WNCN) — Another oceanfront home along North Carolina’s Outer Banks has collapsed.
According to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, an occupied house located at 23241 Surf Side Drive in Rodanthe collapsed in the overnight hours between Thursday and Friday.
On Friday morning, response and cleanup operations began but were limited “due to severe weather conditions and the closure of N.C. Highway 12 between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe”. As of late Friday night, the highway had reopened, but the North Carolina Department of Transportation said crews would monitor N.C. 12 overnight to see if it needed to close again.
Rodanthe’s beachfront is closed “due to hazardous debris” from the house collapse.
“The Seashore is also urging its visitors to avoid the beach and ocean for potentially many miles to the south of Rodanthe,” officials with the National Park Service, which oversees Cape Hatteras, said.
The house on Surf Side Drive is the sixth one to have collapsed in Rodanthe since May, according to NPS. Seashore officials said they are communicating with the owner of the most recently-destroyed home and are also monitoring other unoccupied threatened structures on nearby G A Kohler Court and Sea Oats Drive.
