Agriculture ministry aims to boost local production and explore export markets

Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou said on Friday that ministry’s aim is to support agricultural production that meets domestic needs while exploring new export markets for Cypriot products.

Speaking at the Famagusta district council’s Agricultural Heritage Festival, Panayiotou said the agriculture ministry is strengthening its cooperation with academia, producers, and supporting products with Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

She also highlighted ongoing viability studies for specific crops, considering Cyprus’ climate conditions, and acknowledged the sector’s challenges, including international pressures and prolonged drought.

“Agriculture, although a small part of Cyprus’ GDP, plays a crucial role in supporting various professions and limiting urbanisation,” Panayiotou said.

“The sector is essential for preserving the environment and addressing climate change.”

She also referenced the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, “which remains vital for ensuring food security and absorbs a significant portion of the EU budget”.

Panayiotou finally praised the Union of Cypriot Farmers for its efforts in advocating for farmers’ rights and reaffirmed the ministry’s continued support.
