Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert admitted that Israel was behind the assassination of Imad Mughniyeh, the former military commander of Hezbollah, in 2008.

Olmert said, during an interview yesterday with the Israeli Channel 13: “We did not talk about this in the past, but I think today we can acknowledge this fact.”

He added: “We got rid of the greatest killer, the most vile, and the most explosive they had, who built the entire army: Imad Mughniyeh.”

He explained that the operation “took place in another country, not in the country in which he lived, and not in Lebanon, but in another country,” pointing to interesting circumstances that he cannot and does not want to talk about.

When asked for more details, Olmert confirmed that Mughniyeh actually died due to an explosion, as explosives were placed under the back of the car..

In response to a question about the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah and whether this should lead to a comprehensive war and attack on Lebanon. Olmert replied: “Quite the opposite.”

Olmert pointed out that current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu needs to understand that pushing Hezbollah back a few kilometers will not bring security to the north, adding that Hezbollah has missiles with a range of 40, 50, 100 and 200 kilometers.

It is noteworthy that Imad Mughniyeh was the head of Hezbollah’s military arm, and was killed in a car explosion in Syria 16 years ago.

In 2015, it was reported that the killing was a joint assassination between the CIA and Mossad, according to the Washington Post, but Israel did not officially claim responsibility.
