“African peace” opens the door for Sudan’s return and raises widespread criticism

The statement stressed the importance of preserving Sudanese state institutions, and condemned the violence, clashes and the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in Darfur He called for the urgent lifting of the siege on the city of El Fasher and ensuring the arrival of humanitarian aid.

The statement urged the warring parties to cease-fire And implement the agreements reached in the Jeddah Declaration regarding humanitarian access, protection of civilians, and withdrawal from civilian homes and buildings.

Observers and politicians criticized what they called “ignoring” the foundations of the Sudanese crisis in the Peace Council’s statement regarding the results of its delegation’s visit to Port Sudan during the first week of October.

According to observers, the statement adopted by the Council regarding the report of the field mission to Port Sudan on the third and fourth of October, ignored the major violations resulting from the air attacks that led to the death of thousands of civilians since the outbreak of fighting in mid-April 2023, and gave legitimacy to the army commander. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan It gives him the green light to form a civilian government.

Bakri Al-Jak, spokesman for the Civil Forces Coordination “Taqaddam,” said that the Peace Council’s statement departed from neutrality and gave the armed forces the upper hand in any political arrangements.

Al-Jak explained to Sky News Arabia: “This is an attempt to normalize the Port Sudan authority as an authority with absolute right to act, in contrast to the report of the fact-finding committee of the Human Rights Council.”

He added: “In light of the current composition of the Council, it is not surprising that there is an attempt to legitimize the de facto authority, and it is expected that this step will be portrayed to help the African Union have the ability to communicate with a wide spectrum of Sudanese to know what they want, but the truth is that any presence of the African Union In Port Sudan, it will only be to hear the narrative of the de facto authority and elements of the former regime.”

For his part, researcher and academic Al-Amin Mukhtar points out that the statement did not mention the violations committed by the army, whether with regard to aircraft bombing or arrests carried out on the basis of identity and political affiliation.

Mukhtar told Sky News Arabia: “The statement proved that… African Peace and Security Council He was immersed in flattery and weakness, blatantly sided with the army and treated as if there was a popular civilian authority elected or representing the people.”

He pointed out that the statement “did not specify the mechanisms for proposing peaceful solutions, nor pressure cards on the belligerents,” adding, “This position will complicate resolving the crisis and open the door to fueling regional and international conflicts.”

Mukhtar criticized the talk about returns Sudan The African Union, despite the fact that there are no reasons for freezing its membership in the Union.
