Communication during a dream
California-based REMspace is a neurotechnology company specializing in improving sleep and lucid dreaming. Using specially designed equipment, REMspace claims that two people successfully induce lucid dreams and exchange a simple message with each other.
In May 2023, REMspace founder Michael Radoga made headlines after he reportedly drilled into his skull to implant a microchip in an attempt to control his dreams.
Radoga, who shared details and graphic images on social media, says the chip was designed to stimulate the motor cortex in his brain during REM sleep. Although he almost died from blood loss, he was still optimistic about the potential of the experiment.
Lucid dreamsAccording to WebMD, it is the state of awareness that you are dreaming during sleep. While about 50 percent of people report experiencing at least one lucid dream, the idea of communicating within such a state is still in the early stages of research.
Lucid dream apps
In a press release, REMspace said lucid dreaming, especially during the REM phase, holds many potential applications, including solving mental health issues and learning new skills.
Radoga emphasizes the psychological benefits of lucid dreams, suggesting that they can help reduce nightmares, confront phobias and address interpersonal issues. He also confirms that it is possible to train new skills during lucid dreams.
The REMspace team claims to have achieved communication between two participants during a lucid dream on September 24, 2024. According to Radoga, the participants received random words generated by a server through earphones while they were dreaming. One participant reportedly repeated the word in his dream, and a second confirmed it after waking, which REMspace describes as the first instance of two-way dream communication.
Radoga also says the team has developed a dream language called Remmyo, which can be detected through electromyography sensors. These sensors are able to pick up certain sounds produced during dreams. According to REMspace, this technology allows for real-time communication while dreaming, although these results have not yet been peer-reviewed.
The way forward
While REMspace continues to explore what it describes as revolutionary research, it also offers products such as Smart sleep masks A platform for sharing dream diaries.
In the future, they say they are working on enabling more complex forms of communication in dreams, including full conversations and interactions with external servers.
Within a few years, “communicating in dreams will become commonplace,” Radoga predicts. Until then, the scientific community is waiting for peer-reviewed evidence to prove these interesting, but currently unconfirmed, claims.
