100 killed in Nepal floods

Rain-related disasters are common in South Asia during the monsoon season from June to September, but experts say climate change is increasing their severity.

Large areas of water were flooded Nepal Since Friday, prompting disaster authorities to warn of the possibility of flash floods in many rivers.

Police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki told Agence France-Presse: “The death toll has risen to 101, and 64 people are missing.”

He added: “The death toll is likely to rise as search and rescue operations continue in the affected areas.”

Rivers overflowed around Kathmanduleading to the flooding of nearby homes.

Basanta Adhikari, spokesman for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, said that the authorities are working to rescue those affected by the floods and provide relief to them.

The authorities deployed more than 3,000 security personnel to assist in rescue efforts by helicopters and robotic boats.

All domestic flights from Kathmandu were canceled as of Friday evening, including more than 150 departures.
