Christodoulides, Mitsotakis hail ‘historic’ White House meeting

President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the historical significance of the meeting with US President Joe Biden during their statements to the press following their meeting in Athens.

Both leaders highlighted the importance of Christodoulides’ visit, adding that it marked the first time in 28 years that a Cypriot president had been received at the White House.

Christodoulides described the meeting as a recognition of Cyprus and Greece’s strategic role in the region.

“In an area of high geopolitical importance, Cyprus pursues a constructive strategy, one driven by actions and results, not just words,” he said, adding that the efforts bolster the ongoing pursuit of a resolution to the Cyprus problem.

“Cyprus’ foreign policy remains steadfast and aligned with the right side of history. I am also very satisfied with the strong coordination between Cyprus and Greece, and our shared direction in implementing a strategy that yields results.”

Mitsotakis congratulated Christodoulides on the meeting, describing it as a testament to the strategic relationship that Cyprus has developed with the US, “one that complements Greece’s own ties with Washington”.

Mitsotakis also said that the US recognises that the time has come for a “fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions”.

He then called the meeting at the White House “a pivotal step, one that strengthens recent momentum in the ongoing efforts for Cyprus”.
