According to the official Iraqi News Agency, he was elected House of RepresentativesThursday evening, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani Chairman of the Council after winning the second round of voting.
Al-Mashhadani won 182 votes compared to 42 votes for his competitor Salem Al-Issawi With whom he competed for the presidency of the House of Representatives.
39 ballot papers were deemed invalid during the voting process.
Al-Mashhadani’s election came about a year after the dismissal of the previous Speaker of Parliament. Muhammad Al-HalbousiBy a decision from the Federal Court based on a forgery lawsuit filed by Representative Laith Al-Dulaimi, in which Al-Halbousi was accused of forging the date of his resignation from the House of Representatives.
The House of Representatives failed to elect a speaker several times in light of the political differences and divisions within the Sunni House, and the position has been administered, since November last year, by acting First Vice President Mohsen al-Mandalawi, who is from the Shiite component.
