Police hunting for men who assaulted officer

Police on Wednesday were on the hunt for two people who assaulted an officer while trying to visit a detained woman in Paphos.

Two individuals aged 33 and 37 walked into the city’s police station seeking to visit a woman who was held in custody.

According to the city’s deputy police operations chief Michalis Nicolaou, an officer contacted the detention facilities and was informed that the woman had completed her visiting hours.

One of the two men had visited her earlier on the same day.

The officer told them they were not allowed to visit, and it was also very late, prompting an angry reaction.

One of the men pulled out his phone and informed the officer he was filming him and would upload the footage on social media.

Nicolaou told CNA the policeman informed them they were not allowed to record and asked to see the phone to confirm the footage had been deleted.

Both men reacted according to Nicolaou and shoved the police officer before a scuffle ensued.

The policeman told them they committed a crime and were under arrest but they ran off and drove away.

Nicolaou said the policeman visited a doctor who found he had abrasions and redness on his chest and right arm.

Arrest warrants were issued against the two individuals and they are wanted for conspiracy to commit a felony and a misdemeanour, escape from lawful custody, assault on a police officer, causing actual bodily harm and malicious damage.
