Fire at horse track not suspicious, police say

The police currently do not suspect any foul play after a fire broke out at Nicosia’s hippodrome in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A police spokesperson told the Cyprus Mail the fire had broken out in a generator inside the closed area of the hippodrome at around 2am, and that the police were alerted to the fire and attended the scene.

They added that after the area was initially cordoned off, investigations began once the sun rose to determine the cause of the fire.

Those investigations are still ongoing, with it not currently suspected that there was any malicious intent surrounding the fire.

The fire brigade had said earlier on Wednesday that they had also attended the scene, utilising their breathing apparatus and spraying foam at it to put it out.
