Below is a timeline of the conflict between Israel and Lebanon:

1948

Lebanon Participates with other Arab countries in the war against the nascent state of Israel.

About 100,000 Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes in British Mandate Palestine during the war arrive in Lebanon as refugees.

Lebanon and Israel agree to a truce in 1949.

1968

Israeli special forces destroy dozens of passenger planes in Beirut Airport In response to an attack by a Lebanon-based Palestinian group on an Israeli passenger plane.

The Palestine Liberation Organization moves to Lebanon two years after being expelled from Jordan Violence is increasing across borders.

1973

Israeli special forces kill three Palestinian resistance leaders by shooting them in Beirut In response to the killing of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Palestinian militant attacks on Israel increased, and Israeli military responses to targets in Lebanon increased in the 1970s, prompting many Lebanese to flee the south.

Sectarian tensions within Lebanon are escalating and civil war is raging.

1978

Israel invades southern Lebanon and establishes a small occupation zone in an operation against Palestinian militants after an armed attack near Tel Aviv.

Israel supports a local Christian militia called the South Lebanon Army.

1982

Israel invades Lebanon, reaching Beirut, in an attack that follows an exchange of fire on the border.

Thousands of Palestinian fighters evacuated by sea after a bloody 10-week siege of the Lebanese capital that included heavy Israeli bombardment of West Beirut.

Hundreds of civilians killed in camps Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugees were driven out by Christian militias who were allowed to enter by Israeli forces after a newly elected Lebanese Maronite president was killed in a car bomb explosion.

1985

Israel withdraws from central Lebanon in 1983 but maintains forces in South.

Israel establishes an official occupation zone in southern Lebanon about 15 kilometers deep and controls the area with its ally, the South Lebanon Army.

Hezbollah launches a guerrilla war against Israeli forces.

1996

With Hezbollah attacking Israeli forces in the south and firing rockets into northern Israel, Israel launches a 17-day offensive called Operation Grapes of Wrath that kills more than 200 people. Lebanonincluding 102 killed in an Israeli bombardment of a UN base in the village of Qana in southern Lebanon.

2000

Israel withdraws from southern Lebanon, ending 22 years of occupation.

2006

In July, Hezbollah crosses the Israeli border, kidnaps two Israeli soldiers and kills others, sparking a five-week war that includes heavy Israeli strikes on Hezbollah strongholds andLebanese infrastructure.

Israeli ground forces invade southern Lebanon, but much of the conflict is fought through Israeli air strikes and Hezbollah rocket fire. The war ends without Israel achieving its military objectives, and Hezbollah declares “divine victory.”

At least 1,200 people were killed in Lebanon, most of them civilians, and 158 Israelis, most of them soldiers.

2023

Hezbollah began exchanging fire with Israel on October 8, a day after an attack led by the movement’s militants.agitation) On towns in southern Israel and the outbreak of the Gaza war.

Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, says its attacks are aimed at supporting Palestinians under Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip.

The conflict escalates in September when thousands of Hezbollah radios are blown up in an attack apparently blamed on Israel, killing dozens and wounding thousands. Israel launches an attack on Beirut that kills senior Hezbollah leaders.

Days later, Israel launched its largest bombing of the war, causing, according to Lebanese authoritieskilling more than 500 people in one day, forcing tens of thousands to flee the south.
