The significant geostrategic role of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East in view of the latest developments was highlighted by the US Deputy National Security Adviser in New York.
Jonathan Finer met with President Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The “excellent level of cooperation between the governments of Cyprus and the US was acknowledged [and] relations between the two countries are closer than ever […] the common desire to further deepen the strategic cooperation was confirmed,” Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated.
According to Letymbiotis, Finer underscored Cyprus’ reliability as a US ally and conveyed personal thanks from US President Joe Biden for the Republic’s role in the ‘Amalthea’ humanitarian corridor, which, he said “greatly contributed to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.”
For his part, Christodoulides expressed appreciation for the US stance on the Cyprus issue, as well as for the excellent cooperation the countries in the course of implementation of the ‘Amalthea’ initiative.
The president also discussed the readiness of the Republic regarding the first round of the Cyprus-US strategic dialogue, scheduled for October 23, in Nicosia, Letymbiotis said.
Cyprus’s inclusion in the US Visa Waiver Programme by 2025 were also addressed, as well as US involvement in corruption case investigations.
Developments in the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine, and other international issues were also discussed.
