Guterres is “concerned” about the escalation in the Middle East after the Israeli attack

The spokesman added, “The Secretary-General reiterates his urgent call to all parties to stop all military actions, including in… Gaza and LebanonThey will make every effort to prevent a comprehensive regional war and return to the approach of diplomacy.”

At dawn on Saturday, it was bombed Israel Military sites in Iran, but its response to the attack launched by Tehran earlier this month did not target its oil and nuclear sites, and it has not issued any promise of response so far.

The risk of a broader war breaking out between Israel and Iran has led to tension in the region, which is already witnessing escalation in light of the wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

The Israeli army said that before dawn on Saturday, dozens of aircraft had launched three waves of strikes on missile manufacturing facilities and other sites near Tehran and in western Iran, and warned Tehran not to respond.

For its part, Iran said that air defenses successfully responded to the attack, but two soldiers were killed, and some sites suffered “limited damage.”

A semi-official Iranian news agency quoted sources promising a “proportionate response” to… Israeli strikes.

Tensions have escalated between Iran and Israel since the Hamas movement, backed by Tehran, carried out an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which raised fears of a broader conflict in the region that global powers could be drawn into and endanger global energy supplies.

Fears of escalation have increased since the beginning of this month, when Iran fired about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, killing a person in the occupied West Bank, in response to previous moves by Israel.

Tensions have also worsened in light of the raging conflict in Lebanon, where Israel is waging an intense campaign against Hezbollah, Iran’s main ally in the region, to prevent the group from firing missiles at northern Israel.

The United States and other countries are calling for an end to the cycle of confrontation, and a senior American official said, “This (attack) must be the end of the matter.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said that Tehran “has the right and obligation to defend itself,” but added that it “is aware of its responsibilities towards peace and security in the region,” in a statement that was characterized by a lighter tone than statements issued in previous waves of escalation.
