CyBC strike to hit main news bulletin

CyBC strike to hit main news bulletin

The main news bulleting on CyBC is under threat next Monday as unions at the state broadcaster, Evrik Oho-Sek, Sytyrik Oho-Sek, and Sidikek Peo Rik, on Monday announced they will strike.

According to a joint statement released by the unions, the strike was announced in response to the non-payment of pension benefits to CyBC retirees.

The unions indicated that further measures may follow if the issue remains unresolved.

The statement also highlighted that nine employees who retired in 2023, along with those who retired in 2024, have not received their pensions, leaving them financially vulnerable.

The unions stressed “it is unacceptable for employees to retire and remain without their pension benefits nearly two years later”. They criticised procedural delays, claiming that workers should not be held responsible for the employer’s ongoing failures.

During a meeting between the unions and Finance Minister Makis Keravnos in July, a plan to resolve the issue was outlined as a result of which the unions suspended their planned strike. However, two months later, the issue remains unresolved.

We reiterate the decision to initiate strike action on September 30,” the statement said. “Further steps may be taken if no resolution is found, though we hope to avoid such measures.”

The unions concluded by expressing hope that CyBC, along with the interior and finance ministry, as well as the rest the government, “will act decisively to resolve the issue”.
