Congressional agreement to avoid ‘shutdown’ of US federal institutions

Congressional agreement to avoid ‘shutdown’ of US federal institutions

Congress was supposed to pass the 2025 budget by the end of September — the end of the fiscal year — to keep all services funded.

But in the absence of reaching Congress To reach an agreement on next year’s budget, a temporary financing measure was expected.

Republicans have been demanding for weeks that any budget be linked to new conditions requiring voters to prove their American citizenship, a provision added under pressure from Republican candidate Donald Trump, who continues to assert, without providing any evidence, that he was a victim of electoral fraud in 2020.

On Wednesday, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives failed to pass a bill that would combine a temporary funding measure with a six-month budget extension.

The agreement announced Sunday excludes the temporary financing measure and extends the funding only until December 20.

During the presidential elections to be held on November 5, the identity of the party that will control both houses of Congress will also be determined.

The agreement reached on Sunday postpones the crisis to the period between Election Day and Inauguration Day, scheduled for January 20.

“I am pleased that bipartisan negotiations quickly resulted in a government funding deal free of cuts and poison pills,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said in a statement.

The bill, which the House of Representatives will vote on this week, also allocates an additional $231 million to the Secret Service, a significant increase for the federal agency tasked with protecting senior political figures and which has been widely criticized after two assassination attempts on Trump.

The bill also provides an additional $47 million to fund security in Washington during the presidential inauguration.
