3rd Cyprus Choreography Showcase arrives this week

Arriving to showcase the work of local choreographers and put Cyprus on the global dance map is the third edition of the Cyprus Choreography Showcase (SΧΚ). Co-organised by the deputy ministry of culture and the Rialto Theatre, the Showcase takes place every two years and the next edition will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Continuing with its aim to present local choreography work abroad and create greater visibility for Cypriot contemporary cultural, the Showcase has selected a rich series of dance works that will make up the three-day agenda.

“The SXK has become an institutional event that presents selected choreographic pieces conceived and created in Cyprus over the past two years,” explain organisers. “More specifically, the SXK offers the opportunity to Cyprus-based choreographers to present their works within an organised context to artistic directors and international contemporary dance festival representatives, thus fostering collaborations with global dance networks. In this way, the Showcase enhances the choreographers’ efforts for international promotion and presentation of their works abroad. At the same time, SXK offers the chance to the local audience to re-watch some of the most memorable choreographic productions.”

What’s more, the Showcase will also host a parallel events agenda under the title Meanwhile organised by Dance House Lemesos, Dance House Lefkosia, and Nea Kinisi. Roundtable discussions, artist projects and more parallel events which were selected through an open call will take place on Saturday and Sunday as the Showcase wraps up.

“The organisation aims to present works intended for alternative presentation spaces, curate parallel events and support alternative forms of choreographic creation,” conclude organisers. “This year’s programme includes works created within the context of personal initiatives, residency programmes, and independent festivals and is enriched with a moderated discussion concerning the relevance of Cypriot choreographic creation and its position in contemporary European reality.”
