Cyprus pledges financial stake in interconnector project

President Nikos Christodoulides and Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday reiterated their interest and commitment to implement the electricity interconnector project.

Christodoulides met Mitsotakis in Athens at the Maximos mansion, where he briefed the Greek PM over cabinet’s approval for Cyprus’ participation in the project.

The President reiterated Cyprus’ political commitment to participate in the Great Sea Interconnector project with an equity investment as soon as possible.

This will unfold after a due diligence study is completed and a ‘special purpose company’ is setup for which there are talks at an advanced stage, also with non-EU countries, Christodoulides said.

Energy Minister George Papanastasiou earlier this week said the government decided it would pay €25 million per year from January 2025 through to December 2029, so that consumers will not be burdened with a possible increase in bills.

During the meeting, Christodoulides and Mitsotakis also discussed the Cyprus problem and their upcoming visit to New York next week for the UN General Assembly.

Christodoulides said he would continue to work towards resuming negotiations, and would prove this “with actions, not words.”

Mitsotakis underlined both countries were coordinating for developments on the Cyprus problem and the UN General Assembly.

“Greece and Cyprus are two countries which are a pillar of stability in a turbulent geopolitical region of the planet.

“At this time in particular, our coordination is more important than ever.”

Christodoulides is in Athens with his wife Philippa Karsera Christodoulides, where they will attend a dinner with the Cyprus Shipowners’ Association in the evening.

The President is expected to return to Cyprus on Friday morning.
