Dubai Criminal Court sentenced a young man to two years in prison, fined him one hundred thousand dirhams, confiscated the seized items, and deported him from the country after serving the sentence, on charges of bringing and possessing psychotropic substances in circumstances not permitted by law.
The Public Prosecution charged the convict with bringing and possessing two psychotropic substances, namely “a medical drug for the substance Tramadol” and “a medical drug for the substance Tapentadol” in circumstances not permitted by law. The accused stated during the investigations that he received the seized items in his possession from a person in his country and brought them to deliver them to another person, without knowing that they contained psychotropic substances. Meanwhile, a female inspector from Dubai Customs (Passenger Operations Department) testified during the investigations of the Public Prosecution that while she was on duty as a customs inspector at Dubai International Airport, the accused’s luggage was suspected. He was directed to the inspection area, transferred to the X-ray machines, and asked to conduct a manual inspection. The bag was placed on the inspection table, and upon searching it, food items were found. Upon searching the box, suspicious tablets were found. Accordingly, the accused was referred to the Anti-Narcotics Office to take their necessary measures.
The accused’s forensic laboratory report revealed that the quantity he possessed consisted of 291 Tramadol tablets and 300 Tapentadol tablets, which are listed in Schedule No. 8 of Federal Decree-Law No. 30 of 2021 and its amendments.
The Dubai Criminal Court indicated in the grounds for its ruling that the court had established that the psychotropic drugs were found in the accused’s bag, which was in his possession, and that his claim that he had received food supplies from someone else, in which the psychotropic drugs were hidden without his knowledge, and placed them in his bag was not proven, which is why the court concluded that the accused was aware of the presence of the psychotropic drugs in his bag.
