The police cybercrime unit on Wednesday, with the aid of Interpol, is continuing to investigate bomb threats sent to two hotels and a hospital overnight.
Interpol is involved in the search for the perpetrators who emailed ultimatums informing staff that bombs installed in the premises would be detonated if money was not sent to cryptocurrency accounts.
The threats are known to have been sent from a “non-EU” state” and there are other targets in addition to Cyprus, the police spokeswoman told the CyBC.
“The motives were clearly extortion and nothing of concern was found on the premises. There is no need for the public to be alarmed,” the police representative said.
The threatening messages arrived at 7.30pm in an unnamed private hospital in Limassol and two hotels in Nicosia.
The message to the hospital demanded a €25,000 ransom, saying that non-payment would lead to a bomb explosion on the premises.
Emails sent to the hotels demanded €75,000 to be paid in bitcoin, with the same threatened consequence.
