(NEXSTAR) — Reese’s holiday-shaped chocolate and peanut butter offerings are likely no stranger to your trick-or-treat bowl, Easter basket, or Christmas stocking. You may have even picked up some of the medal-shaped peanut butter and chocolate candy during the Olympics earlier this year.
But when it comes to the holiday between Halloween and Christmas — Thanksgiving, of course — you’re stuck between offering leftover pumpkin-shaped Reese’s or slightly-too-early Christmas tree-shaped Reese’s.
So why has Reese’s seemingly overlooked providing a specially-shaped peanut butter and chocolate candy during a holiday dedicated almost entirely to overindulgence?
“Why hasn’t the REESE’S brand made a Thanksgiving-shaped Peanut Butter Cup? Great question,” the company told Nexstar via email. “We’re not saying it’s off the table—right now, we’re just keeping things classic.”
In defense of the chocolatey, peanut buttery brand, Reese’s did sell a massive 3-pound Peanut Butter Cup “pie” for Thanksgiving meals in previous years. There are, also, football-shaped cups, fitting for the relationship between NFL-viewing and Turkey Day.
Sure, you could argue a traditional Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup is like a pie you may see on Thanksgiving, with its round shape, raised edges, and not-quite-a-pie-tin paper sleeve. But as for any hopes of a peanut butter and chocolate turkey, leaf, stuffing, or cornucopia, Reese’s lovers are out of luck — for now.
“But who knows? Maybe next year we’ll carve out some time for it,” the company added. “Stay tuned—you never know what might pop out of the oven next!”
For now, if you’re a fan of the holiday shapes, Reese’s has a plethora of Christmas-themed offerings. That includes the classic Trees, in both milk chocolate and white chocolate; the Miniatures and the Bells; Holiday Lights; Sugar Cookie cups; Santas and Nutcrackers; and the assortment of mystery shapes, which include Snowmen, Stockings, and Bells (different from the already-mentioned Bells).
And while we have you, we’ll address the biggest question of all: yes, the holiday-shaped Reese’s do taste different than the regular cups. According to the makers of Reese’s themselves, it’s due to the “unique, undeniable ratio of peanut butter to chocolate in each shape.”
