KENO Publications welcomes a renowned New York based poet, writer and performer in Cyprus next week. Sean Patrick Mulroy will be in Nicosia for a limited series of literary events on December 6, 7 and 8.
An internationally recognised writer and performer, Mulroy is the winner of the 2020 Button Poetry Chapbook Contest and published his first book of poetry, Hated For The Gods in 2023. Currently on the European leg of his World Tour, Mulroy will offer three exemplary literary sessions to Cypriot audiences, taking place in Nicosia’s Flea Theatre.
On the Friday, a poetry performance will take place by the poet himself at 8pm followed by a mini tutorial on poetry performance and general live performance at 9pm.
A poetry writing workshop will happen on the Saturday about avoiding cliches in writing. “In this workshop, you’ll learn how to identify and avoid common ideas and images that have gone cold with overuse,” says Mulroy. “We’ll spend time discussing the meaning of cliché, searching for clichés in your own work and the work of others, how to effectively repair moments of cliché, and finally, how to subvert clichés and make familiar ideas fresh again.”
The second part of the workshop is called The Shape of the Verse: A Guide to Form Poetry and will be about poetic forms, breaking free from writing limitations and rules. The final event of the series on the Sunday will begin in the morning with a lecture on Queer Poetry History followed by a Q&A with Mulroy.
