Man dies after crash involving dump truck in Wilkes County

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A man has died after he collided with a dump truck while driving in Wilkes County.

At about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, troopers responded to a crash on Clingman Road at Bethel Road in Wilkes County.

Troopers say a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox was heading west on Bethel Road when it tried to turn left from a stop sign onto Clingman Road. The Equinox turned in front of a 1990 International dump truck heading north.

The driver of the Equinox, 55-year-old David Edward Wolfgang Sr., of Jonesville, was critically injured and flown to a hospital by helicopter. He died at the hospital on Tuesday.

The driver of the dump truck was not injured.

Investigators say there is currently no evidence that impairment or speeding were factors. Wolfgang was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt.

No charges will be filed in this case.
