Three days full of world music are coming up as December arrives, bringing together the island’s musicians and festival organisers from abroad to celebrate tunes and rhythms from around the world. The 11th Cyprus Jazz & World Music Showcase will take place at Rialto Theatre in Limassol on December 6-8 with 14 bands and over 60 musicians. Music lovers, this one’s for you!
Ten bands will present new work at the showcase while another four will be presented at parallel events next to the theatre. Opening the showcase next Friday will be the bands Mr Wilson, The Gandalfinis, Numina and Krúe kicking off the performances at Rialto Theatre at 7pm. Friday’s parallel events programme will include performances by the Burek duo and Sis I Cracked My Head Open at 10pm followed by a jam session which will wrap up every evening.
On the second evening, the Michalis Kouloumis Quartet will perform as well as Ioanna Troullidou, the Ermis Michail Quartet and The Kicker Band. Then, Ogmios and the Alexandros Adam Quartet will perform next to the theatre. On Sunday night, Nabuma and MorFarm Big Band Co. will wrap up the Showcase’s performances. An impromptu jam session will again take place to officially conclude the 2024 edition.
Apart from welcoming the music-loving public, foreign festival organisers and professionals from the international music industry have also been invited to attend with the aim of getting to know and contact the Cyprus music scene. The primary goal is the subsequent invitation of Cypriot artists to participate in international festivals and organisations abroad, thus creating a platform for the exchange of artists’ experiences and practices at an international level.
At this year’s event, the following guests will be in attendance: Antonis Zouganelis – Artistic Director of the Athens Jazz Festival, Vangelis Aragiannis – Artistic Director of the Syros Jazz Festival, Dimitris Vasilakis – Artistic Director of the Rhodes and South Aegean Jazz Festival, Matya Hradil – Artist Production of Czech Music Crossroads, Witold Wnuk – Artistic Director of Summer Jazz/Cracovia Music/ Muzykauwnuka Director, and Giorgos Mitropoulos Cultural Editor of Euronews.
