Two arrested in Paphos over string of thefts

A man and a woman, both aged 29 years old, were arrested in connection with a string of thefts which occurred in the town and the surrounding villages, Paphos police’s assistant operations director Michalis Nikolaou announced on Tuesday.

He said the pair had been arrested at around 2.45am on Monday after police officers had “noticed a suspicious person sitting in a vehicle” in a supermarket car park.

Meanwhile, another person, the 29-year-old man, was later found in the area and had on his person tools which could have been used to carry out a break-in, €102 in cash, and items “for which he could not provide satisfactory explanations”.

After the man had been searched and arrested, police searched the woman’s car, finding more cash, more tools which could be used to carry out a break-in, and other items.

Both people were arrested, while further investigations found evidence linking the pair to the burglary of a restaurant on November 19, when a total of €1,630 in cash and two tablets were stolen, and the burglary of a cafeteria on November 22, when a total of €250 in cash and another tablet were stolen.

Further investigations linked them to the burglary of a cafeteria in Chlorakas, during which €250 in cash was stolen, while the pair were also linked to an attempted burglary of another café on the same night.

Both appeared in court on Monday morning, with the man having been remanded in custody for seven days and the woman having been remanded in custody for four days.

The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.
