Police hunt suspect in $40,000 exchange scam in Limassol

Police hunt suspect in $40,000 exchange scam in Limassol

Police are searching for a man in his 60s suspected of stealing $40,000 from a currency exchange service store in Limassol through deception.

According to the CID, a 54-year-old employee reported the incident, which allegedly took place in Yermasoyia.

The suspect, who had previously visited the store to exchange smaller sums of money, called to inquire about exchanging euros for $40,000.

On Wednesday, the suspect visited the store, and the employee handed him $40,000 in $100 bills. After counting the money, the suspect placed the banknotes in envelopes, which he then put into a small bag on the store counter.

The man told the employee he would return with €36,800 for the exchange.

However, he never came back. When the employee checked the bag, he discovered only two envelopes containing a total of $409 in $1 and $5 bills, leading him to believe the suspect had swapped the envelopes.

The police have since seized the bag as evidence and are investigating the case. The suspect is described as being around 60 years old.
