BARBECUE, N.C. (WNCN) — A soldier based at Fort Liberty died in a head-on crash along N.C. 87 in western Harnett County Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The crash was reported just before 2:45 p.m. in the northbound lanes of N.C. 87 near Olivia Road, close to the Lee County line, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The man who died was driving a Hyundai car south along N.C. 87 when he veered into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer, North Carolina Trooper L.C. Cason said.
There were no passengers in the car and the driver was not wearing his seat belt, Cason said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries.
Cason said troopers were unable to determine why the driver veered into the opposite lanes. There was no evidence of impairment involving the driver who died, he said.
The name of the man who died will be released after his closest relative is contacted.
As of 6:45 p.m., the road was still closed for debris removal, according to Cason.
