BURLINGTON, N.C. (WGHP) — The Burlington Fire Department stresses the importance of “properly discarding smoking materials in approved noncombustible containers” after battling a Friday evening house fire.
At 4:16 p.m. on Friday, BFD responded to a house fire in the 2200 block of Wilkins Street.
The first firefighters arrived just over two minutes after dispatch and found smoke coming from the house with fire showing from a bedroom window.
All residents evacuated except the family dog, who firefighters went in to save.
After putting out the fire in the bedroom where it started, firefighters located the dog unharmed in another part of the house and took the dog outside.
The fire was under control in about 10 minutes.
The cause of the fire was determined to be from “improperly discarded smoking materials,” a leading cause of deadly fires in the United States, BFD says.
No firefighters or occupants were injured; however, the home was significantly damaged.
Damage estimates are $30,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents.
The Burlington Fire Department was assisted by the Burlington Police Department, Alamance County EMS and the American Red Cross.
