House committee sets January deadline for disabled benefits bill

House committee sets January deadline for disabled benefits bill

The House labour committee has set January 21, 2025, as the deadline for tabling a bill regulating the benefit policy for disabled people.

The committee members said it was important to promote the bill the soonest possible, irrespective of criteria for the minimum income.

Committee president, Akel MP Andreas Kafkalias said the bill was still being discussed and that the MPs would continue to monitor the issue until they received draft legislation in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Kafkalias people with disabilities should have their benefits regulated by separate legislation, adding that after ten years of debates, people with disabilities are still struggling to make ends meet and for social inclusion.

He said a person with disabilities should not have to depend on a family member for support.

MPs said people with disabilities deserved better attention and that the finance ministry should take a favourable stance on the effort being made.

The bill is being prepared by the deputy welfare ministry in cooperation with the movement of people with disabilities.

MPs called on the deputy ministry to either table a bill or support proposals already submitted to the House.

They spoke of injustices which should end immediately, before the bill was voted on, which could take months.

The MPs called on the deputy ministry to enter a dialogue with other ministries, such as health, education and interior, to solve problems faced by people with disabilities.
