Ioannou to attend Commonwealth meeting in Samoa

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou will be travelling to Apia, Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting taking place between 21 and 26 October, an announcement said on Sunday.

The minister will be representing President Nikos Christodoulides.

The meeting will be chaired by the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, and it will be attended by Heads of State or high-ranking officials of the Governments of the Commonwealth countries.

During the summit, heads of mission will exchange views on the need for coordinated action by all Commonwealth members to achieve the goal of sustainable oceans.

Following the Inaugural Meeting of Commonwealth Oceans Ministers, organised in Cyprus last April, the participants will discuss the Oceans Declaration, with the aim of shaping the framework and priorities of the Commonwealth towards achieving healthy and sustainable oceans.

The meeting will also discuss global economic and environmental challenges, as well as security issues. The leaders will look at ways to strengthen the Commonwealth’s resilience and joint actions that can be taken to boost trade and innovation and support young people.

Heads of delegations will elect the new Commonwealth Secretary-General and choose the host state for the next summit in 2026.

The Commonwealth includes 56 nations from Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Ioannou returns to Cyprus on October 28.
