Susan Smith; South Carolina mother convicted of drowning her sons up for parole

SOUTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Susan Smith, the woman who killed her two sons after driving her car into a lake in South Carolina in 1994, is set to have a parole hearing Wednesday.

The case involving Smith and the deaths of her sons Michael and Alex made national and international headlines when the story happened, and is considered one of the major crime stories of the 1990s.

Smith was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole as a result of the sentencing guidelines that were in place at the time.

Smith will appear via video link before a panel with the state’s parole board. Others, including Smith’s ex-husband (and father of Michael and Alex) David Smith and former prosecutor Tommy Pope, are expected to attend the hearing from Columbia.

The South Carolina Dept. of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services told Queen City News on Monday that they have received 471 messages regarding Smith’s parole hearing, with only six of those in support of her release.
