Russian wanted for fraud remanded until December

A 47-year-old man wanted by the Russian authorities for fraud was remanded in custody on Wednesday pending his hearing in December.

The decision was taken by the Paphos District Court on Tuesday which also set his next court appearance for December 27, 2024.

The extension of the man’s custody was undertaken after he failed to abide by conditions imposed for his release. In addition to having been placed on the stop-list, these had included a deposit €100,000 in cash, a signed guarantee of €100,000 from a reputable guarantor, a hand-over of travel documents, weekly presentation at the central Paphos police station, and a prohibition on travel through the north.

The 47-year-old failed to meet conditions and was thus taken into custody, the Paphos assistant police chief Michalis Nikolaou said.

The suspect who had been arrested on Monday afternoon, had a Russian arrest warrant pending against him for a crime committed between 2006-2015 in Russia. The Paphos court had issued a temporary arrest warrant on the basis of which he was taken in.

The CID is furthering the investigation.
