Distorted market over fuel prices

Authorities need to investigate why different cities have different petrol prices, the Cyprus Consumers Association said on Tuesday.

Paphos has the highest average price for all fuel, while Famagusta has the smallest price difference between the most expensive and cheapest fuel, the association specified.

It charged “healthy competition does not seem to be working” in Nicosia as it stipulated the capital has both the highest and lowest prices for fuel.

On November 14, the divergence in prices was at 12 cents a litre for 95 octane petrol and 28.2 cents per litre for heating oil.

“In conditions of healthy competition the price deviations observed in the last year, which in September 2024 reached 21 to 23 cents a litre,” are unacceptable, it charged.

The average profit margin by petrol importing companies to retail stations is 6 to 6.5 cents a litre, the association said.

According to Consumer Association data, on 16 November 2024, the average price for Petrol 95 in Famagusta was €1.435, in Larnaca €1.432, in Limassol €1.437, in Nicosia €1.435 and in Paphos €1.46.

For diesel, the average price in Famagusta was €1.598 , in Larnaca €1.594, in Limassol €1.607 , in Nicosia €1.596 and in Paphos €1.621.

For heating oil, the average price in Famagusta was €1.166 , in Larnaca €1.161, in Limassol €1.164 , in Nicosia €1.163 and in Paphos €1.169.
