More delivery drivers attacked in Limassol

Two separate attacks against delivery drivers unfolded in Limassol on Monday evening, with police investigating both incidents.

The first attack took place at around 7pm in Ayios Ioannis, where a group of youths grabbed the driver’s wallet and fled the scene.

At around the same time in Germasogia, a delivery driver reported he was robbed by some six people who were on a motorbike and bicycles.

The driver was attacked and the suspects stole his phone and money he had on him.

The development unfolded only hours after MPs at the House human rights committee discussed the spate of attacks against delivery drivers.

Though stakeholders urged the government to adopt a national strategy combating racism, Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis called it all but pointless, saying a series of measures are already being enforced.

Though their effectiveness has been called into question, experts have also warned delivery drivers are the victims of racist attacks and are paying the price of a racist rhetoric spewed by the government itself.
