WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Joe Biden is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the Group of 20 summit, his last as president, as the world braces for President-elect Donald Trump to take office in just over two months.
During brief remarks Monday, President Biden continued to voice his support for Ukraine.
“The United States strongly supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Everyone around this table in my view should as well,” Biden said.
Over the weekend, President Biden announced he authorized Ukraine to use U.S. supplied long-range missiles to strike inside Russia. The move, which has been long opposed by the U.S., comes as Biden’s term as commander-in-chief wraps up.
Biden also announced the U.S. has pledged $4 billion over the next three years to the World Bank International Development Association. The IDA is designed to help some of the world’s poorest countries.
“As you know, this is my last G20 summit. We’ve made progress together, but I urge you to keep going,” Biden said. “This group has it in it’s power to usher in a new era of sustainable development.”
The annual G20 summit focuses on issues of international importance including the global economy and mitigating climate change.
President Biden is scheduled to attend a leaders reception Monday afternoon. The summit is expected to wrap up on Tuesday.
