Police chief concerned over increased racist attacks

Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis met with his department heads on Friday to address the recent attacks on migrant delivery drivers, emphasising the need for sensitivity in handling these cases.

The meeting was carried out in the morning, according to police spokesman Christos Andreou, who said the chief also discussed road deaths and a broader police restructure.

Andreou specified that the attacks against foreign nationals have become even more apparent, particularly delivery drivers.

Speaking to CNA, Andreou said the chief called on the force to handle these cases with due sensitivity, whether they concern a verbal, physical or racial attack.

Officers were also instructed to take immediate action, especially regarding arrests.

Arnaoutis likewise encouraged officers to maintain communication with individuals who file complaints and to actively engage community police members in preventing and resolving these issues.

Regarding road deaths, the chief stressed that all members of the force should be concerned and should treat these cases with the seriousness they warrant, taking proactive measures to prevent further fatalities.

Additionally, during the meeting, Arnaoutis expressed his intention to implement key changes within the force.

Although the spokesman did not provide specific details, Arnaoutis emphasised the importance of these improvements in enhancing public trust in the police.
