‘Island’s intangible cultural heritage must be preserved’

The intangible cultural heritage of Cyprus must survive as a feature of our identity, Deputy Minister of Culture Vassiliki Kassianidou told participants at a traditional folkloric event in Larnaca.

The deputy minister was speaking at the 34th such event organised by the Municipality of Aradippou, on Thursday evening.

It is important to pass on customs, such as of that of the religious fairs, from generation to generation, unchanged over time, Kassianidou said.

She added that the custom of the religious fair had therefore been included, since 2018, in the national register of intangible cultural heritage which encompasses social practices, rituals and celebrations.

“We aim for the intangible cultural heritage of our country to survive as a recognizable feature of our […] identity, to be adopted and passed on […],” Kassianidou said, adding the ministry of culture was supporting this endeavour through practical means.

These include opportunities for musicians, poets, dancers, and singers to showcase their talents and for cultural groups host yearly performances at the municipality.

The deputy minister concluded that such expressions were important for all with ties to the island and ensured a continuation of its cultural heritage.
